NHPC Trainee Engineer Recruitment 2026 is a specialised engineering recruitment drive under Advertisement No. NH/Rectt./02/2026. This is not a routine open category engineering vacancy. The official notification clearly states that it is a Special Recruitment Drive (SRD) for SC / ST / OBC (NCL) / PwBD candidates for the post of Trainee Engineer in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical disciplines through GATE-2024 / GATE-2025 score. Because of that, any page that presents it only as "72 posts for all candidates" is incomplete and potentially misleading. Your updated entry should therefore make the category nature of the drive very clear from the first paragraph itself.
NHPC has notified a total of 72 vacancies in this cycle. Based on the official table, the total breakup works out to 11 posts for Trainee Engineer (Civil), 35 posts for Trainee Engineer (Electrical) and 26 posts for Trainee Engineer (Mechanical). The vacancy statement combines backlog positions and resultant vacancies, and the detailed category distribution is given in the official notification. There is also a separate set of vacancies identified for PwBD candidates under the SRD framework, which should be mentioned in the overview table rather than ignored.
This recruitment uses the GATE score as the primary screening basis. Candidates must have appeared in GATE-2024 or GATE-2025 and should possess a valid score in the corresponding paper. Only the normalized marks out of 100 for GATE-2024 / GATE-2025 are valid for this recruitment exercise. GATE scores from any other year are not accepted. This is a crucial detail that should be stated very clearly because many engineering candidates land on job pages directly from search results and may otherwise assume old GATE scores will work.
The educational requirement is also discipline-specific. For Civil, the candidate should hold a full-time regular Bachelor''s Degree in Engineering / Technology or B.Sc. (Engineering) in Civil discipline from a recognised Indian University / Institute approved by AICTE, with minimum 60% marks or equivalent grade, or AMIE in the relevant discipline with enrolment up to 31.05.2013 and minimum 60% marks. Similar requirements apply for Electrical and Mechanical disciplines. For Electrical, only the disciplines specifically mentioned in the notification are eligible, including Electrical, Electrical & Electronics, Power Systems and related notified streams. For Mechanical, the scope includes Mechanical, Production, Thermal and Mechanical & Automation Engineering as specifically mentioned. Any other non-notified or assumed equivalent discipline is not eligible.
The upper age limit is 30 years as on the last date of online application. Age relaxation is available as per government rules for the categories covered under the notification. Because the drive itself is for reserved categories and notified PwBD positions, the age section on your page should not be written in a thin single line. It should separately mention that reservation, relaxations and document formats will be applicable strictly as per NHPC and Government of India rules.
The pay scale is attractive. During training, the selected candidates are placed in the pay scale of Rs. 50,000 - 3% - 1,60,000 (IDA), E2. The notification also notes that the total annual emoluments for the new joinee are approximately Rs. 15 lakh to Rs. 16 lakh. After successful completion of training, the candidate may be absorbed as Engineer / Officer in the same scale within one year as per rules. NHPC has also stated that candidates selected through this drive will be required to execute a service agreement / surety bond for a minimum period of four years including training. The bond amount is Rs. 4,00,000 plus applicable GST for OBC (NCL) candidates and Rs. 2,00,000 plus applicable GST for SC / ST / PwBD candidates.
The selection process is better explained in a structured way than on many copy-pasted pages. The candidate is first shortlisted on the basis of normalized GATE marks in the relevant paper. Shortlisted candidates are then called for Group Discussion and Personal Interview. NHPC has assigned exact weightages: 75% weight to GATE marks, 5% weight to Group Discussion and 20% weight to Personal Interview. There is no separate qualifying cut-off for Group Discussion alone, but there is a cut-off for the combined score of GD and PI. OBC (NCL) candidates need 40% in combined GD & PI, while SC / ST / PwBD candidates need 30%. Shortlisted candidates may also be required to undergo psychometric assessment, the result of which may be used as an input during interview. These details are exactly the kind of user-oriented quality signals that should appear in a properly written recruitment page.
The online application window opens on 16 March 2026 at 10:00 hours and closes on 06 April 2026 at 17:00 hours. The fee rule is also specific: OBC (NCL) candidates have to pay a non-refundable fee of Rs. 600 plus applicable taxes, which comes to Rs. 708 as mentioned in the notification. No registration fee is charged from SC / ST / PwBD / Women / Ex-Servicemen candidates. This should be shown exactly as notified.
Since this recruitment is category-specific and GATE-based, your page should not oversimplify it. The SQL below updates the title, description, eligibility, selection, fees, dates and vacancy table in a format that is much closer to the clarity users expect from a high-quality government jobs page.
